A patio is an outdoor extension of a house. Although typical furnishings such as chairs, tables and some plants are standard for decorating a patio vs porch, you can further dress up your patio using more creative touches throughout. Dressing up a patio is a way to express your sense of style.
Choose a color scheme for the different patio and porch. Choose colors comforting for you and similar to those used indoors if the patio is attached to or visible from the house. Collect color and fabric color swatches if you have a difficult time deciding between color schemes. Add or change chair cushions for all seating. Use pillows for benches, dinner table seating, and porch swings and bar stools. Bet on a patterned fabric that contains the colors you have chosen for the patio. Use a coordinating cloth for the main table. Add or replace umbrella if you are using or want one. Use a market style umbrella in a color that matches the pillows.
Lay out outdoor-rated rugs. Use neutral shades such as beige, tan or cream to match the color scheme. Avoid the dark carpet that makes the space look smaller. Hang drapes from the ceiling beams or window frames. Sheer panels add an element of drama to a patio when it blows and the panels blow in the wind. Lay a wood or rattan ceiling fan if you have wires in a roof surface. Bet on a light fan to keep the area looking wide and open. Change plant containers to more decorative versions such as those covered by mosaics or painted in one of the main interior colors used in the patio area.
