The Lowes garage doors are often the largest opening on the outside of the house, so choosing a strong and durable door is essential to making sure your home is protected. Your garage door should be able to withstand the effects of wind and weather, as well as bumps and dents of cars, balls and other impacts. When choosing a steel garage door, gauge or thickness of steel, it can serve as an indication of the door’s strength and ability to withstand these forces.

Garage door indicators generally range from 24 to 28, although you may be able to find specialized products or CUTs outside of this range. “This old house” recommends choosing gauge 24 doors because of its strength. The National Association of Realtors also recommends sticking with gauge 24 or 25 garage doors, as they reduce the risk of dents and damages compared to 27 or 28 units.

When shopping for garage doors, you must understand the difference between the nominal and true caliber. Each meter number corresponds to a specific industry standard thickness. For example, a 24 gauge door should be 0.0209 inches thick, depending on the door and access systems of International Association manufacturers. Nominal gauge typically means that the total thickness of the garage door, including galvanizing and other coatings, equals the industry standard thickness for that gauge. While the total thickness of the steel with all its layers can measure 0.0209 inches, the steel is much thinner. Galvanizing and other coatings increase the weight and thickness of the door, they do little to add strength.
